Wheatsheaf Community Hall launches new website

Today, the Wheatsheaf Community Hall launched its new website to help promote the hall and available spaces among the local community.

The new site provides booking information and details of the available spaces as well as information about the history of Wheatsheaf Hall.

The Wheatsheaf Hall has been a community venue since 1988 when members of the local community leased the building from the council. It was awarded grade II listed status in 1975 and is run by volunteers.

The new website is available under http://www.wheatsheafhall.org.uk/

Sponsorship opportunity for the new 99% TFL poster campaign

During the Royal wedding, Transport for London (TFL) kindly donated advertising space in the underground for the 99% campaign. The project proved successful and hence a new poster is being designed by young people. This will go live in September 2011 in the London transport network (e.g. tube, busses, rail), TFL offices and website.

This is a call for sponsors!
IARS, the charity that runs the campaign would like to hear from organisations and individuals who would like to support the TFL poster campaign. Sponsorship of any level is welcomed. This is a unique opportunity to demonstrate social responsibility, become part of the 99%, and show commitment to young people.

Poster Aim: “To reduce the impact on disproportionate levels of stereotypes experienced by young people”

Sponsors will be acknowledged through various online and press media. To see who is involved in the 99% visit http://www.99percent.org.uk/partners/

About the 99% Campaign and IARS

The 99% campaign is a pan-London, youth-led, collaborative initiative that sits within the charity, Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS) and aims to make London a safer, more inclusive and cohesive place for all.

To this end:

  • Disadvantage thinking is addressed and positive stories are promoted
  • Awareness is raised; perceptions are tackled; and
  • New youth opportunities are created while current opportunities are highlighted and enhanced by making them part of a kite-marking, partnership movement that uses the 99% brand to recognise high quality positive engagement youth projects.

Will Tuckley, Chief Executive of the London Borough of Bexley said: “I am delighted that the 99% campaign, developed and launched by the London Serious Youth Violence Board, will continue on as a legacy project under the directorship and guidance of Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS). IARS have been closely associated with the London Serious Youth Violence Board (LSYVB) through its Youth Advisory Board (YAB). The YAB have acted as a youth led forum and sounding board to enable the voice of young people to be heard on the work and direction of the LSYVB”.

The Metropolitan Police, the Children’s Commissioner, Victim Support, the Youth Justice Board and the London Criminal Justice Partnership are among the organisations who have signed up to the pledge of the campaign.

The campaign is supported by a Partnership Group consisting: Metropolitan Police, Youth Justice Board, Greater London Authority, Transport for London, London Councils, British Transport Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, Bexley and Ealing Council as well as key charities such as the Anne Frank Trust UK, the Jack Petchey Foundation, Leap, YMCA England, the Princes Trust and the Foyer Federation.

Wilcox Road Market

A small group of local residents have come together to form South Lambeth Trading Collective to stimulate the economic and social regeneration of the area.

Our first project is to be the development of a market on Wilcox Road SW8 and we have been working with Lambeth Council to help achieve this goal. We want to engage the community in the development of this exciting initiative and would therefore be grateful if you could take five minutes to complete the questionnaire that follows.

You views and involvement are important to us:

Proposed Northern line extension public consultation begins

TfL and Treasury Holdings are hosting exhibitions for local residents about the Northern line extension on the following dates:

-Wednesday 18 May and Monday 6 June from 12pm to 8pm at the Acquire Arts Gallery, 155 Battersea Park Road, London SW8 4BU
- Friday 20 and Saturday 21 May from 10am to 6pm at The Long Room, The KIA Oval, Kennington, London SE11 5SS
- Thursday 26 and Friday 27 May from 10am to 6pm at Sainsbury’s Nine Elms, 62 Wandsworth Road, London SW8 2LF

Transport for London and developer Treasury Holdings are starting a public consultation to hear local residents’ views on the proposed private-sector funded 3km extension of the Northern line from Kennington to Battersea Power Station. The public consultation starts today (Monday 9 May) and finishes on Friday 17 June.

The Mayor’s Transport Strategy supports an externally funded extension of the Northern line to support development in the surrounding area. The Tube extension is part of a package of transport measures that would enable the regeneration of the GLA’s wider Opportunity Area which covers Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea.

This new infrastructure would support up to 25,000 jobs and 16,000 new homes in this major redevelopment area. It will supplement existing Tube and National Rail stations, as well as the Vauxhall bus interchange, and help ease pressure on Vauxhall station.

If the extension goes ahead two new Tube stations would be created, one at Nine Elms and one at Battersea allowing easy access to the Tube network. Local residents would be less than 15 minutes by Tube from Battersea to the West End and the City.

Around 40,000 leaflets are being sent to homes and offices in the surrounding area asking people for their views on the project, the location of stations and other infrastructure associated with the extension. People can also find out more about the proposals at exhibitions being held on several days in May and June.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson gave the go-ahead for the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station last year – the approved plans include a Tube station at the power station but the full development is dependent on the extension of the Northern line. The construction of the extension is subject to external funding and the award of a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) by the Secretary of State.

In the first stage of the public consultation process in 2010 local residents were asked by Treasury Holdings to comment on four possible route options, all of which ran from Kennington to Battersea Power Station. The preferred option was the route via south Nine Elms.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said: “The iconic Battersea Power Station and its surrounding area have lain dormant too long but the incredible potential of the area could be realised by a privately funded extension of the Tube. I hope local people will visit the exhibitions and respond to the consultation as the plans have the potential to transform this part of London into a thriving new quarter, and deliver the first expansion of the Northern Line for around 70 years.”

Michèle Dix, Managing Director for Planning for TfL, said: “We’re very much behind this private-sector funded project, which will not only support the proposed development of the Northern line extension but become an important transport link for people in the Battersea and Nine Elms area.

“We are really keen to hear what local residents think about these proposals for the Northern line extension.”

Rob Tincknell, Managing Director for Treasury Holdings, said: “The extension of the Northern line is recognised as necessary for the full regeneration of the Nine Elms Opportunity Area. The project to make this happen is an excellent example of how the public and private sectors have come together to achieve a set of shared objectives, all aimed at integrating this area into the rest of Central London and bringing real benefits to everyone who lives in this part of London and beyond.”

The planning framework for the area includes a proposed level of developer contributions which can be used to fund infrastructure, including the critically important Northern line extension.

Subject to funding and further planning permission the Northern line extension could be completed in 2017.

The draft Transport and Works Act Order for an externally funded Northern line extension is now expected to be submitted by autumn 2011. TfL and the Mayor support the coalition Government’s recent announcement regarding Tax Incremental Financing and its potential role in funding infrastructure in the Opportunity Area.

The Vauxhall-Nine Elms-Battersea Opportunity Area covers 227 hectares (2,443 acres) and is the largest development opportunity close to the centre of London.

The Tube is undergoing a huge and essential programme to upgrade its ageing infrastructure – vital to cope with a growing population and to support the economic development and growth of the capital and the UK. This includes the introduction of new track and signalling and the rebuilding of some of our most important stations. By the end of the current programme in 2020 there will be 30% more capacity.

This will inevitably result in some disruption for passengers, but TfL is working hard to provide information and alternative travel options. The work is essential to provide for London’s growing transport needs now, and into the future. TfL is urging all Londoners and Tube, London Overground, London Tramlink and DLR passengers to “check before you travel” at weekends, allowing extra journey time where necessary. Wilcox Road and Wilcox Close Improvement works - Update

Over the next six months and on behalf of Lambeth Council, FM Conway will be improving the public realm along Wilcox Road and Wilcox Close.

The scheme will see the footway renewed with improved paving, with feature granite, the carriageway will be resurfaced but the cobbles will be retained as a character feature, the lighting will be improved, new and better trees will be planted, improved benches and bins will be placed, and the commercial bins will be placed in a store.

Full details of the improvements are detailed further down. Work has already begun, with signs and fencing being erected. It is planned to replace the footway and kerb lines in three phases, from the Wandsworth Road end of Wilcox Road eastwards, leaving one side of the pavement open at all times.

The carriageway will be excavated and renewed from mid-March until June. Wilcox Road will therefore be closed but servicing will be available from either the Wandsworth Road or Hartington Road end of Wilcox Road and all services such as refuse collection will continue on the current schedule.

Works to be carried out

• Renewing the footway along Wilcox Road with improved concrete paving, with feature granite strips at intervals along it;
• Renewing the footway along Wilcox Close, including the new feature granite strips;
• Resurfacing the carriageway along Wilcox Road but retaining the cobbles as a character feature;
• Repairing all the drainage along Wilcox Road and Close;
• Removal of unnecessary street furniture such as redundant guard rails;
• Improving the lighting along both roads;
• Planting new and better trees and planting along both roads;
• Installing better street furniture such as improved benches and bins along both roads
• Placing the commercial bins in a new store on Wilcox Road;
• New cycle parking provision at appropriate locations;
• Parking to be made parallel to the street, giving more footway room for pedestrians along Wilcox Road;
• Creating easier crossing points across Wilcox Road for mobility impaired users of the road; and
• Replacing the near-derelict brick bin store on Wilcox Close near South Lambeth Road with soft landscaping
